Today we are learning about how to be healthy. This is part of our work for the Great Indoors badge and also for your My Skills Award.
Exercise
Exercise is important to keep your body fit and healthy! Exercise helps to build strong bones, a healthy heart and lungs, strong muscles and good posture. It also helps you to be flexible and to stay a health weight. It helps you to feel better and gives you more energy. You should aim to exercise every day and it does not have to be difficult or need a lot of other people around. Try this game:
Find a dice. Make a list of 6 different exercises you like doing. This is my list:
- 5 Star jumps
- Skip for 1 minute
- 5 press ups
- Jump up and down for 10 seconds
- Stretch up tall and the bend down and see if you can touch your toes. Do this 5 times
- Dance madly for 1 minute
Roll the dice. Whatever number you get, you then have to do the exercise! You could take it in turns with someone else if they’d like to join in.
Who is most out of breath?
Do you breathe faster or slower before and after exercise?
Which exercise makes your heart beat fast?
Which was the most fun?
Foods that are good and bad to eat
Click here for a picture showing the types of food that we eat every day. It shows the foods we should aim to eat most, and those we should only have as a treat. Make a list of the foods that you like best in each section of the plate.

Looking after your teeth
Smile at yourself in the mirror and look at all your teeth!
Your teeth are really important – you need to keep them clean so they help keep you healthy. Strong, healthy teeth help you chew the right foods to help you grow. They help you speak clearly. And they help you look your best with a lovely smile.
Taking care of your teeth helps prevent plaque. Plaque are bacteria that stick to your teeth. The bacteria break down food on your teeth into acids that eat away tooth enamel, causing holes called cavities. Plaque can also cause gum disease. Your gums are those soft pink tissues in your mouth that hold your teeth in place. If you don’t take care of your teeth, cavities and unhealthy gums can make your mouth really sore and make eating difficult.
Hundreds of years ago, as people got older their teeth would rot away and be very painful. To get rid of a toothache, they had their teeth pulled out. Finally, people learned that cleaning their teeth was important, but they didn’t have toothpaste. People used to clean their teeth by chewing sticks, then they tried making a toothpaste with things like ground-up chalk, brick, charcoal, oyster shells and egg shells. The toothpaste we use wasn’t invented till about 100 years ago.
How to look after your teeth:
- Brush at least twice daily for about 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste.
- Brush last thing at night before bed and at least on 1 other occasion.
- Spit out after brushing and don’t rinse – if you rinse, the fluoride won’t work as well.
- Visit your dentist twice a year for a check up.
- Be careful what you eat and drink. Fruit, vegetables, cheese, lean meat and nuts are better for teeth than biscuits, sweets and crisps. Water is better than sweet drinks.
